Sodium benzyl (2,3-bis(dodecanoyloxy)propyl) phosphate is an anionic amphiphilic phospholipid analog composed of two saturated lauric acid (C12:0) chains on a glycerol backbone, a benzyl phosphate headgroup and sodium as the counterion. It is surface-active, synthetically versatile, and used as an intermediate or model compound in lipid chemistry and membrane studies. Upon hydrogenolysis, the benzyl group can be removed to yield the free phosphatidic acid-type lipid, increasing hydrophilicity and enabling bilayer formation.
