N-(2,3-bis(icosanoyloxy)propyl)-N,N-dimethyldecan-1-aminium iodide is a synthetic quaternary ammonium lipid featuring very long-chain saturated fatty acid residues (icosanoic acid, or arachidic acid, C20:0). It is part of a family of cationic lipids commonly designed for use in gene delivery systems (lipoplexes or liposomes) or as model membrane components. It is used as a cationic lipid to form complexes with negatively charged nucleic acids (DNA/RNA), facilitating cell transfection. It is a component of cationic liposomes or lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) for drug delivery. It mimics natural lipid bilayers with a strong hydrophobic tail structure and positive headgroup.
